Homemade Cookies for Kairos Ministries

What is Kairos?

Kairos Prison Ministry International, Inc. (Kairos) is a Christian faith based ministry which addresses the spiritual needs of incarcerated men, women, youth, and their families. By sharing the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ, Kairos hopes to change hearts, transform lives and impact the world. Kairos sprang from the Cursillo movement and is supported by volunteers from the 4th Day movements such as Cursillo, National Episcopal Cursillo, Presbyterian Cursillo, Lutheran Via de Cristo, The Upper Room’s Walk To Emmaus, and independently ecumenical Tres Dias as well as volunteers from independent and non-denominational churches. As a ministry, Kairos embraces a diverse group of volunteers working together to fulfill Christ’s call to action in Matthew 25:36. Read more

How does our church support Kairos?

Deacon John and Sandra Mills have been doing the Lord’s work with prisoners for the past 20 years. They goes to the prison to lead bible study and help bring these prisoners the word of God.

NorthPointe Church will support the Mills and Kairos by making cookies to be taken to the prisoners. The cookies need to be homemade and be dropped off on Sunday Sept 24, 2017 at the morning service.

The preferred size is around the size of a chips ahoy cookie, two to three inches in diameter, they put three stacks of four cookies in a quart size zip-lock bag and all prisoners in the whole prison gets a bag during the Kairos Ministry Time. There are around 4,000 prisoners currently being ministered to by Kairos.

Kairos Cookies

Any kind of homemade cookie is accepted except sugar cookies, those are too crumbly.

Here is a recipe for those who don’t have a cookie recipe:

BASIC COOKIE DOUGH
(Makes five dozen)
1 cup shortening (not butter)
1 cup of brown sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
2 tsps. Vanilla
2 ½ cups of flour
½ tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
2 ½ cups of chocolate chips
Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time. Sift dry ingredients and add to creamed mixture. Beat in the vanilla. Add chocolate chips. Drop one spoonful, per cookie, onto cookie sheets. Bake at 350 degrees until medium brown to dark brown (thirteen to twenty minutes). Cookies should be two to three inches in diameter.

From Kairos of Texas

We may need up to 5,000 dozen cookies for a typical Kairos weekend. Do the math… that’s 60,000 cookies! Homemade cookies are a tangible expression of Christian love and an indication of God’s concern for a group of people who seldom encounter either in the course of their daily lives. Your loving sacrifice will provide “bread” that shines the Light of God’s Grace into the darkest corners of a prison unit.
